Save During The Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday

Texans have the opportunity to double their savings this Memorial Day weekend. You can not only pay less for items designed to use less energy but also enjoy the cost-saving benefits of lower utility bills.  Over the holiday weekend Energy Star appliances, from refrigerators to clothes washers to air conditioners will be sold tax free.  That nets you an instant savings of 8.25%. To qualify for the sales tax exemption, look for appliances that have the blue energy star sticker on it. Your savings can add up quickly.  To calculate how much you'd save, simply plug the price of the appliance into a calculator, multiply times .0825 and you'll see how much you'll save in tax savings.  (EX:  An $800 washer would get an instance savings of $66 ) Using energy efficient products can mean significant savings for households and help create a healthier environment.  You'll find that the appliances will pay for themselves with the additional energy savings.  On a personal note - last Spring we put a new Energy Star air conditioner in our home.  I see a noticeable difference in our electric bill monthly, typically 30% less than we were paying.  In the Texas heat, that savings adds up quickly! The tax exemption is for all purchases up to $2,000 and anything over that, customers only have to pay taxes on the difference.   
The products qualifying for the exemption are:

• Air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less
• Refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less
• Ceiling fans
• Incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs
• Clothes washers
• Dishwashers
• Dehumidifiers
• Programmable thermostats

The tax-free holiday also applies to Internet and catalog sales of eligible products, provided that (1) the item is paid for and delivered to the purchaser during the exemption period; or (2) the purchaser orders and pays for the item and the retailer accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period.
