Need It, Keep It = Great Way To Give Back!

envelope-money-system-budgetI totally love this idea my friend Kim posted on her facebook page.  In fact, I like it so much I'm stealin' it for you!  That's how much I like you.  :)  Actually, Kim got it from a friend of hers, who was kind enough to pass all the information on (Thanks Rebecca!).  This little gem shows up right smack dab in the middle of Thanksgiving week, and the season of giving and receiving.  Coincidence?  I don't think so.

You know those scammy chain letters, insisting that if you send $1 to one person on the list, you’ll receive $50 from other people in the chain? A few years ago a man named Doc Compton came up with a mission that is pretty much the exact opposite of that: he’s been passing out letters to strangers with a single dollar bill enclosed, asking them to pay it forward. “If you need it, keep it,” the letter says. Otherwise, simply pass it on to someone else who could use the money—and, if you’re able to, add a dollar of your own to the envelope. The “Need it, Keep It” chain letter is the McKinney, Texas native's attempt to make the act of giving go viral. “There are so many things that go viral, so many inane things with no social impact,” Compton told The Dallas Morning News. (Viral cat videos, anyone?!?!)
“I thought, ‘What if we could make something like this go viral and get big and in so doing change some people?’ It’s not about the money; it’s not about whose hands the money ultimately lands in. It’s about the hands along the way that get to experience the gift of giving.” (LOVE THAT!).  If you'd like to participate, here's what the letter says:

Dear Friend,
This is not an advertisement or a sales pitch - it is a gift from me, just some random stranger out there in the world. If the money in this envelope comes to you at a time that it will help you out, please keep it.
If, however, this envelope finds you at a time when it could help somebody else out more than you, simply pass it on, in hopes that it will find it's way to someone who could really use it.
If you can, and you'd like to, add a dollar or two to the envelope and THEN pass it along. It's all up to you. If you need it, keep it. If you don't, don't.
Enjoy the blessings either way!
