Gift Cards = Cheap Gas (4X Gas Reward Points)

UPDATE:  I just filled up my car for $2.69 a gallon due to a $0.40 per gallon fuel discount at Tom Thumb!  After putting 15 gallons in, that netted me a savings of $6 - not too shabby!  I got the fuel discount for filling my prescriptions at Tom Thumb pharmacy....something I'd do anyway.

Here's a post I did back in May to remind you that there ARE ways to save at the pump!
Both Tom Thumb and Kroger have fuel rewards programs that can save you BIG BUCKS at the gas pump.  Buy gift cards or fill prescriptions, and you'll get an instant fuel discount per gallon. Which will equal cheap gas.  OK, maybe not CHEAP gas.  CheapER gas!  These points add up really quickly!  Both stores have a large selection of gift cards - so if you're gonna buy one anyway, you may as well buy it from someplace that will reward you in some way, right?!

Here's how the Fuel Rewards Programs work.
There are three ways to earn.
1) Every $1 spent on groceries = 1 point
2) Every $1 spend on qualifying gift cards = 4 points
3) Every prescription filled = 50 points

Tom Thumb has increased their program rewards this summer, every $1 you spend in gift cards will earn you 4X Fuel Points.

Not to be outdone, Kroger is doubling the limit on it's fuel reward program from $1 to $2 per gallon May 27-September 30, 2012 with it's "Hot Savings on Fuel, All Summer Long" promotion.  This summer, customers can earn & redeem up to 2,000 fuel reward points for up to $2 in savings per gallon.
Among its other offers, for every purchase of $50 in gift cards from Kroger's Gift Card mall, customers receive 100 fuel points.  Currently, Kroger is offering quadruple fuel points on most gift cards as part of it's "Dads and Grads" savings event.

No, you cannot buy grocery store gift cards and totally maximize on your savings.  They were smart enough to exclude those.  Good thought, though!
